How to get a work permit in Spain

Would you like to start living and working in Spain? Then you’re going to need to get your work visa. But there are different options in that regard. There are four different ways through which you can apply for a work permit in Spain.

Firstly, there are two visas governed by the Entrepreneurs Law (visas that can be applied for while already in Spain): the entrepreneur visa and the work permit as a highly-qualified worker.

The regular work permit, in case you would like to start your own business (self-employed) or work for a company in Spain (employed). In both cases, you must start the legal application process from your country of origin.

You can also obtain your residence and work authorization with the permit called EU family member. The requirement, as the name suggests, is to be a family member of a European citizen.

Whether you’re a non-EU citizen or an EU citizen, the different work permit requirements and the legal process to obtain it will depend on the route you choose:

Profesional Altamente Cualificado

Regular Work Permit In Spain: Main Requirements

Employment Work Permit

There are two main requirements you must consider when applying for a work permit to start working for a company in Spain:

  • You cannot be inside the country to begin the visa application, and it will be your employer (the person who will hire you) who must start the process.
  • Not any job offer is valid. To be accepted, the job position must be on the shortage list, which respects the national unemployment situation.

Self-Employment Work Permit

If the project you intend to start is not innovative enough or does not use a certain level of technology, then the self-employment work permit will be your best option. What should you consider?

  • You must carefully prepare and send your business plan to one of the 5 agencies in Spain responsible for its analysis and subsequent approval.
  • You must have the necessary training and qualifications to perform the tasks your company requires.
  • Finally, you must demonstrate that you will be able to receive sufficient funding for the operation of your business.
