What is the EU Blue Card

About the service

What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card in Spain is a special residence and work permit aimed at attracting highly qualified non-EU professionals to work within the European Union. It is the European equivalent of the US Green Card, designed to compete for global talent by offering unique advantages.

Its most powerful feature is European mobility. After 12 months of legal employment in Spain, an EU Blue Card holder can move to another EU country to work under a much simpler process than starting from scratch.

To be eligible, you must have a highly qualified job offer with a contract of at least 6 months. This requires you to hold a university degree of at least 3 years, or, in certain fields like ICT, demonstrate at least 3 years of relevant senior professional experience.

The salary for the position must also meet a specific threshold. For 2025, the offer must be between 1 and 1.6 times the average gross annual salary in Spain (approximately €40,000), with potential reductions for certain professions in high demand.

This route is also managed by the specialized fast-track unit, the UGE-CE, guaranteeing a resolution time of just 20 working days. This makes it an incredibly efficient option for companies and professionals alike.

Like the Highly Skilled Visa, the EU Blue Card application bypasses the need to check the National Employment Situation, removing a significant barrier to entry.

This permit also offers favorable family reunification. Your spouse and children can join you, and your partner will automatically receive a permit that allows them to live and work in Spain.

Our expertise is in determining the best route for your profile and company. We analyze whether the Tarjeta Azul-UE or the national Highly Skilled Visa is more beneficial, and we build a perfect application to ensure a fast and successful resolution.

I had an amazing experience working with Dario and his team throughout my visa process. They made everything completely stress-free and were incredibly helpful every step of the way. Dario speaks excellent English, which made communication easy and comfortable, and he was always responsive, patient, and clear in explaining everything. He and his colleagues handled every detail with care, efficiency, and in a very timely manner, which gave me a lot of confidence and truly made my life so much easier throughout the entire process. By far the best lawyer I’ve worked with in Barcelona. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend Dario and his team to anyone needing help with visas or immigration.

A friend recommended Illay Legal to help obtain my permanent residency in Spain. Exceptional service! Marc explained every part of the process clearly and precisely. Once I provided all the necessary details, the team did all the work: pre-completed the necessary paperwork, helped retrieve padron and digital tax certificate, secured appointments in my preferred neighbourhood and checked in with me before and after both appointments. I subsequently switched both my tax and business accountancy contracts to Marc's firm and have enjoyed the same very high level of service. Communication via email and WhatsApp, and extremely responsive to answering any small or large questions/concerns. A huge endorsement to the whole team - I would highly reccomend. Regards Ismail

Lawyers I truly trust and genuinely enjoy working with. Huge thanks to Marc and Soundous for guiding me through a very stressful documentation process over the past few years. Together we managed to resolve a complicated situation I ended up in because of a bureaucratic issue with my previous paperwork. They have well-organized processes and a lot of experience with different kinds of cases — even the tricky ones. Whenever I was stressed or freaking out, they were always there to reassure and support me. That human approach means a lot. With them, you are in very good hands 💚

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the EU Blue Card in Spain

What's the main difference between the EU Blue Card and the Highly Skilled Visa?

The main difference is mobility. The EU Blue Card is a European permit that facilitates moving to another EU country to work after 12 months. The Highly Skilled Visa is a Spanish national permit and its benefits are primarily within Spain.
The recent update to the law allows you to apply for the EU Blue Card directly from within Spain, as long as you are in a legal situation (for example, as a tourist or on a student visa).
To obtain EU long-term residency, you need 5 years of continuous residency within the EU. The Blue Card makes this easier by allowing you to combine periods of stay in different EU countries to meet this 5-year requirement.
You generally have three months to find a new job that also meets the Blue Card requirements. You must notify the authorities of your change in employment status to avoid any issues with your permit.
No. Each EU country sets its own salary threshold based on its average national salary. Spain’s threshold is one of the more competitive and accessible within the European Union, making it an attractive entry point.
