What is the Student Visa in Spain?

Imagine yourself studying at a prestigious Spanish university, learning the language in a vibrant city, or advancing your career with a specialized master’s degree. The Student Visa in Spain is the official authorization that allows non-EU citizens to reside in the country for more than 90 days to pursue their educational goals.

This visa is versatile and covers a wide range of academic activities. It is designed for full-time courses at an authorized institution that lead to a degree or certificate, including university degrees, master’s programs, PhDs, professional training, and accredited language courses.

However, only higher education programs (university, master’s, or PhD) include additional advantages. Holders of these permits may work up to 30 hours per week, bring their immediate family members (spouse or minor children), and apply directly from within Spain during the first 30 days of their legal stay. For all other study programs, the application must be submitted at the Spanish Consulate in your home country before traveling.

This flexibility allows for better planning and avoids unnecessary trips back home.

These are requirements for Student Visa applicants:

Letter of Acceptance

You must have proof of admission to a full-time course at an authorized educational institution in Spain.

Sufficient Financial Means

You must prove you have enough funds to support yourself for the entire stay. The minimum is 100% of Spain’s monthly IPREM (approx. €600/month).

Full Health Insurance

You need a private Spanish health insurance policy with full coverage and no co-payments, valid for the entire period of your stay.

Clean Criminal Record

You must provide a criminal record certificate from any country you have resided in for the past two years, proving you have no criminal history.

Medical Certificate

You must submit a medical certificate stating you do not suffer from any diseases that could have serious public health repercussions.

What happens after I finish my studies? Can I stay in Spain?

Yes, but only in cases of higher education studies. You can apply for a 1-year Job Search Visa to look for employment, or directly modify your student stay to a work permit if you receive a qualifying job offer before your student card expires.
