What is the Non-Lucrative Residency?

The Non-Lucrative Residency in Spain is one of the most popular visas for non-EU citizens who wish to live in the country without engaging in any professional or work-related activities. It is the perfect gateway for retirees, investors, or anyone with sufficient financial means to support themselves.

This permit allows you to settle in Spain and simply enjoy its culture, climate, and quality of life.

The cornerstone of a successful application is demonstrating financial self-sufficiency. The Spanish government needs assurance that you will not be a burden on the state.

The minimum requirement is to prove you have access to funds equivalent to 400% of Spain’s monthly IPREM (a public income indicator) for yourself, plus an additional 100% of the IPREM for each family member you bring with you. This is typically proven with bank statements, investment portfolios, or pension certificates.

A crucial aspect of the non-lucrative visa is that the initial application must be submitted at the Spanish Consulate in your country of origin or legal residence. You cannot apply for it while in Spain as a tourist.

This initial residency permit is valid for one year. Afterwards, you can renew it for two-year periods directly from within Spain. After the first year, it is even possible to modify your permit to allow you to work.

This residency also allows you to bring your family with you. Your spouse or partner and dependent children can be included in your application, allowing your whole family to start a new life together in Spain.

These are requirements for Non-Lucrative Residency in Spain applicants:

Sufficient Financial Means

You must prove you have funds of at least 400% of the annual IPREM for yourself (approx. €28,800) and 100% for each family member (approx. €7,200).

Private Spanish Health Insurance

Clean Criminal Record

Can I work remotely for a foreign company with this visa?

No. The Non-Lucrative Visa is strictly for non-work purposes. Any professional activity, even remote work for a non-Spanish company, is not permitted under this visa. For that, you should consider the Digital Nomad Visa.

How much money do I need to have in the bank exactly?

The amount is tied to Spain’s IPREM. For 2025, you must prove access to at least €28,800 for the main applicant plus €7,200 for each additional family member. These funds should be readily available.

Can I work in Spain after the first year?

Yes. After your first year of residency, you have the option to modify your non-lucrative permit to a work permit. This can be either to work for a company or to start your own business as a self-employed individual (autónomo).

Do I have to live in Spain for more than 6 months a year?

Yes. To maintain and renew your non-lucrative residency, you must spend a minimum of 183 days per year in Spanish territory. Failing to meet this requirement could result in the non-renewal of your permit.

Can I use the public healthcare system with this visa?

No, not initially. For the first year, you are required to have comprehensive private health insurance. You may become eligible for the public healthcare system after one year of legal residency in Spain if you, for example, modify to a work permit and contribute to social security.
